The Object Bench

the street's things, struck while you wait

The board next door sets out the twenty clips the game plays. This page is the bench underneath it, and each of those clips is a starting point on it rather than a finished thing: strike the drawing where you like and as hard as you like, carry it out to the garden or in beside the fire, let it go damp, or loose with wear. Change what it is made of and how big it is and it stops being the crate — so the page says, in words, what it has become. Every sound is synthesised the moment you ask for it. Be gentle: a few renders a second is the limit.

Tap the drawing to strike it. Where you tap sets the blow — the middle is dead centre (place −1), the edges are the rim (+1) — and how long you hold sets how hard: a quick tap is a light blow (force −0.3), a second’s hold is a full one (+1). Letting go renders it.

The object

Ten plain knobs, −1 to +1; 0 is the thing exactly as the game has it. The first row PLAYS it and leaves it what it is. The second row REMAKES it, and a line says what it has become. A greyed knob does nothing on this engine — hover its name for the reason.

Played

the same thing, struck differently

Made

no longer the same thing
Phrase: struck again and again, and motifsthe same thing several times over, or an authored sequence

The sound given several times: how many, the silence between, whether the series quickens or slows, fades or grows, steps up or down in pitch. A motif is an authored sequence in its place; a ramp moves any anatomy knob from a start to an end value across the units. A phrase may run up to 20 s and counts one render per unit against your allowance.

Ramp

any anatomy knob moved from a start to an end value across the units, in the knob’s own units; a single unit sits at the start

Advanced: the anatomy knobsthe engine’s own physics, in its own units

Wall thicknesses, modes, bubble radii, fibre lengths, crackle rates. A knob you move is sent as an exact value and shown with a mark; the others show the value the object knobs composed.
